Hourly and as-directed chauffeur hire

Hire a chauffeur and car by the hour or for the day in London. The driver waits between stops, ideal for meetings, shopping and days out.

In short: Hourly or as-directed hire means a car and chauffeur stay with you for a set period, driving wherever you need and waiting between stops. In London it typically costs about £55 to £90 per hour in an executive saloon, usually with a minimum of three or four hours, or roughly £440 to £650 for a full day.

As-directed hire is the most flexible way to use a chauffeur. Instead of booking separate journeys, you book the car for a block of time and decide the route as the day goes on. The driver waits nearby while you are in a meeting, a shop or a restaurant, keeps your bags safely in the car, and is ready when you call. In central London, where stopping and parking are tightly controlled, having a driver who can circle or wait legally nearby saves a lot of time.

It suits days with several stops, uncertain timings or a mix of business and personal plans. Typical bookings include property viewings, a series of meetings across town, a shopping day in Knightsbridge and Bond Street, a family day out, or an evening with dinner and a show. Bookings are usually priced per hour with a minimum, and the clock normally runs from the agreed start time until the driver is released.

How much does it cost?

As a guide, an executive saloon on hourly hire typically costs about £55 to £90 per hour with a three or four hour minimum, or around £440 to £650 for an eight hour day. Luxury saloons and people carriers usually cost more, and journeys well outside London may be priced as a day rate plus mileage. See our full cost guide.

How it works

  1. Outline your day

Share a rough list of stops, start time and how long you expect to need the car. A loose plan is fine.

  2. Choose hours and vehicle

Agree the minimum hours, the vehicle size and the hourly rate, plus how extra time beyond the booking is charged.

  3. Driver at your disposal

The driver arrives at the start time and follows your instructions, waiting nearby at each stop.

  4. Release the car

When you are finished the driver takes you to your final address and the booking ends, with any extra hours added as agreed.

Hourly and as-directed chauffeur hire: FAQs

Is there a minimum booking?

Most chauffeur companies set a minimum of three or four hours for as-directed hire, because the car and driver are committed to you for that block. If you only need a single journey with a short wait, a fixed transfer with waiting time added is often cheaper than an hourly booking.

When does the hourly clock start and stop?

Usually from the agreed start time at your pick-up address until the driver drops you at the final address. Some operators also charge travel time from and back to their base for journeys starting far away, known as garage-to-garage. Ask which method applies before you book.

Can the driver wait outside each stop?

Not always. In much of central London, stopping is restricted, so the driver may need to wait in a nearby car park or keep moving, then return when you message. A good driver will tell you exactly where to meet. Any car park charges are normally included or itemised.

Is a full day cheaper than paying by the hour?

Often, yes. Many operators offer a day rate for around eight hours that works out cheaper than the same time at the hourly rate. Check how many hours and how many miles the day rate covers, and what is charged if you go over either.
