Chauffeur vs black cab vs Uber Exec in London: which should you book?
Updated 6 November 2026 · By the Wimbledon Chauffeur team
The four main options
In London, only licensed black cabs (hackney carriages) can be hailed in the street or picked up at a rank. Everything else, from a local minicab to an app ride to a chauffeur, is private hire, which by law must be pre-booked through a licensed operator. The differences come down to the car, the driver's role, how the price is set and what happens if plans change.
| Option | How you book | How the price is set | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black cab | Hail, rank or app | Taxi meter, rises with time and distance | Short trips at short notice |
| Minicab or standard app ride | Phone or app, pre-booked | Fixed or app-quoted, can surge at busy times | Budget point-to-point journeys |
| Premium app tier, e.g. Uber Exec | App, usually on demand | App-quoted, varies with demand | A nicer car at short notice |
| Chauffeur service | Pre-booked with an operator | Fixed price per vehicle agreed in advance | Airports, business, events, weddings |
What you get with a chauffeur that apps do not offer
- A fixed price agreed before travel that does not change with traffic or demand
- Flight tracking with meet and greet inside the arrivals hall
- Agreed free waiting time and waiting between stops
- As-directed hire by the hour with the same car and driver
- A chosen vehicle class, such as a specific executive saloon or people carrier
- Advance planning for event venues, weddings and multi-stop days
- Account invoicing for business bookings
When a black cab or app ride is the better choice
A chauffeur is not always the answer. For a short hop across central London at short notice, a black cab or app ride is usually quicker to arrange and cheaper. Black cabs can also use many bus lanes and know central London in detail. App rides are convenient when your plans are uncertain and you just need a car now.
- Short, spontaneous journeys in central London
- Last-minute trips where no advance booking is possible
- Single passengers with little luggage on simple routes
- Late-night journeys home where waiting for a pre-booked car is not practical
How costs compare
On short trips, black cabs and app rides are generally cheaper. On airport runs and longer journeys the gap narrows, because a metered fare rises in traffic, app prices can surge at busy times such as early mornings, rain and after events, and a fixed chauffeur price covers everyone in the car. For a family or small group with luggage, a single fixed-price people carrier can compare well with two separate cars.
Compare like with like: ask whether a quote includes airport drop-off or car park charges, the Congestion Charge, waiting time and any extra stops.
Safety and licensing
Black cabs, minicabs, app drivers and chauffeurs working in London are all licensed by Transport for London. Private hire vehicles display a TfL licence disc in the windscreen, and drivers carry a TfL photo licence. The main safety risk is unbooked cars: a driver who approaches you offering a ride, or a car that turns up without a booking, is acting illegally and is not covered by the booking records that protect passengers.
- Never accept a ride from a driver who approaches you, including at airports and stations
- Check the car registration and driver name match your booking
- Use the TfL licence checker if you are unsure about an operator
Tipping etiquette
Tipping drivers in the UK is appreciated but not expected, and there is no fixed rule. Many passengers round up a cab fare or add around 10 percent for good service. For chauffeurs, a tip is entirely at your discretion: some clients tip for a long day, help with heavy luggage or a wedding, while many corporate accounts do not tip at all. Check whether any gratuity is already included in a quote so you do not pay twice.
Quick decision guide
If you are still unsure, match the option to the journey rather than the price alone. The cheapest fare is not always the cheapest outcome if a missed flight, a late arrival at a meeting or a second car for luggage is the result.
- Catching a flight or meeting a client off one: pre-booked chauffeur
- Several stops in one day: chauffeur on as-directed hire
- Wedding, race day or concert: chauffeur with a planned meeting point
- Group of four to seven with luggage: chauffeur people carrier at one fixed price
- Short trip across central London right now: black cab or app ride
- Tight budget and flexible timing: standard minicab or app ride
